There are many meanings of this word, but the one I am referring to is this: Willingness to recognize and respect the beliefs or practices of others. I sincerely feel that people do not have enough tolerance for religions other than their own. And some of them have them none. Zero, zilch, and they also go to the extent of blasting away that faith or faith’s in question. And this seriously bothers me. As a Hindu and living in India , where we have a Hindu majority , I don’t think I have directly come across or experienced any hostility due to lack of tolerance , but of lately , as an active member of a couple of communities on Orkut , I finally faced this hideous monster . It is so ugly. I am a Hindu, a practicing one, if there is such an animal and a proud one. But never ever in my life has this thought crossed in my mind that Hinduism or Sanatana Dharma (which is the correct expression) is the best religion of all or the only path to a place in Heaven, salvation or whatever you are seeking. I cannot believe that Hinduism is the only way to lead a healthy and fulfilling life. Although I am partial to Hindu philosophy, I do not look down upon the other schools of thought. I have been taught that all the different religions are different ways to the one and only God (the credit goes to my dear Grandfather). And I sincerely believe that. Ramakrishna Paramhansa practiced different religions and ultimately realized that the various religions are different ways to reach The Absolute, and that the Ultimate Reality could never be expressed in human terms. Is it that hard to believe someone as great as him? Forget him; there are billions who haven’t even heard of him. What about my own logical and analytical capabilities, what do they say? That we have different religions so that we can fight amongst each other, and will therefore never get bored. Or that there are different religions because the world is not same everywhere. The Middle-east is one big desert, Siberia is covered in ice, and

There are so many things that I can't write them all here . What I have mentioned in my post about Krishna was one . The sad part is that the people who wrote that had done absolutely zero research about it . Disbelieving is one thing , why do they have to heap insults ?
religious intolerances is one of the world oldest and deadliest flaws. If people could be tolerant there would not have been the Holocaust, there would not have been a partition, Kashmir would not be an issue, the Israelis & the Palestinians would not be out to get each other and so on... What you have essentially touched is humanity biggest challenge and overcoming it would be mankind's greatest triumph.

Nicely put brother . Hit the nail right on the head .
I agree with both of you - doggy and you... The world is broken down into race, religion, cults, sects, colour and what not.. and the idea of a united and a harmonious world is just another utopia. But yes,lots of our problems would cease to be one, if we only practice religious tolerance. Respect for each other's faith and beliefs is important for happy co-existence. There are also those politicians who make sure that such a utopia is never realised. Lovely article bro
A Good one.. As I said in my article first of all hindus should stop saying that all religions are equal. Only we say it, other religions dont.
There is no doubt that people on the net say some outrageous and absolutely senseless things. If the criticism was even meaningful one could understand but at times it seems like intended to offend.
I would say maybe we should include their freedom to give their opinion and our freedom to ignore that opinion in our definition of Tolerance, not just from those who are criticising their own faiths but also from those who are criticising other faiths.
Like someone said '
I may not agree with what you say, but I would defend with my life your right to say it."
Also one might keep an open mind and at least give them one chance to explain what they mean.
Agree with you that tolerance is vital for living a civilised life in society. Your article reminds me of a doha my grandmother used to tell me when I was young, and that was, "Kabira teri jhonpri gal katiyan ke paas, karan ge so bharan ge, tu kyon hoye udaas". There is no point in arguing with someone with a closed mind. One can only discuss matters with a person who has an open and receptive mind. Agree with IHM's comment above.
@IHM and JPJ
You are right . The definition of tolerance should be extended . But nonetheless, it is infuriating when you encounter such people .
